Southern Vendée
Situated on the edge of a small hamlet, in the lovely rolling hills of the Vendée, the two-acre camping meadow has beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. Tranquil and secure, there is no road adjacent, the only access being through our old farm courtyard. With a maximum of six vans/tents, there is more than enough space to pitch wherever you like and a 6amp electricity supply can be provided to the favourite areas.
You can find us on the map almost exactly half-way between Les Sables d'Olonne and Poitiers (mostly D949bis) and La Rochelle is approximately 1hr 15mins to the south-west … or just Google ‘Camping Breuil Barret’
The hamlet of La Viollière is just 2kms outside the village of Breuil Barret, which has a bar/restaurant, boulangerie, tennis court and a lovely old church and there are several marked walks which begin from the village centre.
Our nearest town, La Châtaigneraie (6kms) has several supermarkets, banks, shops, a couple of café/bars, restaurants and a takeaway. There is also a very good outdoor swimming pool with slides and a dedicated young children’s area.
The local leisure lake is just a couple of minutes away, popular for fishing and its woodland picnic areas. A café opens during high season and hires out pedaloes and stand-up paddle boards.
The area is full of interesting places within 30 minutes drive such as the picturesque medieval village of Vouvant, Fontenay le Comte (ancient capital of the Vendée) and its Chateau, the donjon (castle keep) and medeival garden at Bazoges en Pareds. The forest of Mervent hides a zoo, an leisure fun park and the Nautique Centre on its lake has boat, canoe and standup paddle board hire. Pescalis is another popular nearby area of lakes for fishing (operating a ‘No Kill’ policy) which also has a small aquarim, tackle shop, a very good restaurant and in high season there is a Local Producers and Craft Market on Sunday mornings. It is also a very popular place for jogging. There are several markets and a couple of small vineyards in the area who offer tastings.
Other local activities include horse riding, go-karting and tree-top adventure courses and lmost every village has its own marked walking route. The Vendée is also a very popular cycling area, though a little hilly for some!
The tranquil water ways of the Venise Verte and famous historical parc of Puy du Fou are both about 45 minutes drive.
Further afield, it is only about 1hr 20mins drive to the lovely long, sandy beaches of the west coast and Il de Ré, or 1hr 30mins to Saumur, the chateaux and vineyards of the Loire and about the same distance to Poitiers and Futuroscope. The distilleries of Cognac are also within reach for a day trip.
